SAN DIEGO -- A daily dose of a drug used to treat genital herpes cuts the odds in half that someone with the virus would pass it to an uninfected partner, researchers report.

It's the first time a drug has been shown to prevent spread of a sexually transmitted disease, and an experiment will be launched soon to see if the same can be done for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
